Summary of my first year PhD life

It has been one year already since I started my PhD, time flies! I still remembered  the first day when  I moved to Berlin. It is just like yesterday, OMG.



12/2016 I started to work in Federal institute of material research and testing (BAM), Berlin, Germany. My supervisor gave me the first task.

1/2017 I wrote my state of art for my PhD topic under the framework of INFRASTAR project.

2/2017 I submitted an abstract for IWSHM2017 based on the task  given by my supervisor.

3/2017 INFRASTAR first training week was held in Berlin, it was the first time to meet 12 ESRs.

4/2017 I moved to Aalborg and started my secondment in Aalborg university and worked on my paper.

5/2017  With the help of teams of John in Aalborg university, I wrote the full manuscript here for IWSHM2017.


6/2017 I was back to Berlin and attended outreach activity PhD retreat in warren which was organized by BAM PhD organization. And I submitted the conference paper.

7/2017 I submitted another abstract for IALCCE 2018, Ghent, Belgium.

8/2017 I attended a summer school in The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS), Magdeburg, Germany. Please view Attending summer school, gain knowlege and enjoy fun!

9/2017 I was supposed to attend the IWSHM conference in Stanford University, USA. Unfortunately I didn't get my Visa in time. But this paper Damage detection and deteriorating structural systems was published  at the end. Instead of going to USA, I did a poster presentation Lessons that I learned from my first PhD poster presentation on PhD day in BAM based on my paper.

10/2017 To comfort me for missing the trip to USA, my supervisor introduced another conference to me which is in China. I submitted another abstract for 7WCSCM 2018.


11/2017 It was a busy month and I attended two training schools. One is the  COST TU1402 Training School on the Value of Structural Health Monitoring  in Milan, Italy. Another one is the internal INFRASTAR second training week in EPFL, Switzerland .

Let's add some fun for presenting scientific work!

In this post I would like to share some examples on how to present scientific work in a more interesting way based on my experience. Since my project is about quantification of the value of structural health monitoring before its implementation, the goal is to help decision maker to save money and make better decision. So that I came up with idea of making an advertisement: Let your investment be worthy. I made this  presentation  to the people from industry during the 3rd Implementation day  in COWI and everyone was amused when they saw this slide. I got very positive feedback afterwards.   During the process of investigating my research project, I gradually found that I was performing a role like a consultant to solve questions from the client who has problem making decisions.  I came up with the idea : why not presenting this interaction like chatting on WhatsApp or Messenger?  So that I made this   Messenger poster  to ...

What's it like working at COWI? My four-month secondment experience

Thanks to my PhD project- INFRASTAR so that I could have the chance to spend four months in COWI  Lyngby, Denmark, for my secondment from Octorber 2018 to January 2019. COWI A/S, as an international consulting group, specialising in engineering, environmental science and economics, it attracts me a lot what's it like working here? I have been working in China, Norway and Germany, it also fascinates me to explore another different working culture in Denmark. After I finished my four-month stay, now I am very excited to share my fresh experience.
