Brainstorming of team values during INFRASTAR Training week #02

Last week, our INFRASTAR project team had our second training week in EPFL Lausanne, Switzerland. We had 5 days of intensive courses and met plenty of excellent lecturers and professors. One of the lecture impressed me a lot and in this post I want to share how we achieve the team building with help of Mr. Polo Looser.

Here is the beautified results of our brainstorming towards team building :)

At the beginning, Mr. Polo Looser wrote three keywords on the black board: Values, Dealing with interaction and Ways of working, which are related to team working. We were divided into three groups and each group would discuss how we understood the keywords and wrote our opinion on the blackboard.

Then  Mr. Polo Looser told us to rank these comments. Everyone can only vote three comments following 3,2,1 points on each key word group.

Finally we got the ranking list of what most people think of the team work!

Top three keywords about our project values:
  1. Creativity and curiosity.
  2. Pleasure.
  3. Trust.

Top three keywords about dealing interaction:
  1. To be direct and honest with everyone.
  2. Informality
  3. Ideally, physically meetings.

Top three keywords about ways of working:
  1. Equal contribution.
  2. Following shared professional principles such as respect time schedule.
  3. Share knowledge.

This lecture is so interesting for me, it is the first time that I get to know how my teammates think about team working. I believe it will definitely help us to cooperate better with each other .

Breaking the wall of Value of Monitoring Information

On August 14,2018, the Morandi bridge in Genoa Italy collapsed, which caused 43 people to die and great losses. Here I am not going to talk about why it collapsed. But I want to say what we can do to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening. Any structures are like us, if we are sick, we go to doctors. But if structures are sick, how could we know?

Yes, through structural health monitoring-SHM! SHMis process of implementing damage detection strategy, which is like a doctor giving us indication of the structure health status. However, the SHM is not like our health insurance which can be free. Some structure owners may be hesitated on investing large money before they see the VALUE.

Although it is proved that SHM is beneficial, the existing literature doesn’t tell them: when to do the monitoring? How often to do that? Which SHM techniques to choose? After monitoring, what action to take? There are so many decisions needed to be made, that’s why here comes my research, which can help t…

Need to make decison towards your relationship? How about a decison tree analysis ?

Supposed you are in a long-distance relationship for some years, of course you want to be with your partner in a same city, but both of you have job in different cities, your partner shows reluctance to move to your city. What will you do? Sacrifice your job to move to another city? Is it worthy to do so? Then you need do a decision tree analysis!

If you move to another city, you need to quit your old job and find a new one, probably you can’t find a new job immediately, there may be a period that you have no income. Let’s assume you need a year to find a new job. Then the costs of moving will be the benefits of your original annual income. For your relationship, you know if you move to your partner’s city, there will be high chance of probability that both you will get married. If you don’t move, there will only be low chance of probability that you will get married. If you get married, your tax level will be lower, you share the rent and perhaps your annual income will be higher, w…
